University of Bayreuth’s Starter Grant Programme
Section
The University of Bayreuth Centre of International Excellence “Alexander von Humboldt” is inviting applications for the 2026 Starter Grant Programme to promote excellent research and strengthen international collaboration across disciplines.
The Centre supports academic exchange across existing boundaries: between disciplines, between different cultures and countries, and between established and younger researchers. It engages in activities opening the research community to society and politics, encourages collaboration that benefits both the candidate and the host, and promotes diversity and gender equality in its awardees.
The Starter Grant Programme is open to all disciplines, with certain specific rulings for African Studies, and awards successful applicants €10,000 to cover all project realisation costs. Grantees accompanied by at least one child receive an additional monthly family allowance of €250. Those who successfully complete their Starter Grant may apply for the follow-up “Booster Grant” worth €20,000, subject to documented results such as joint publications, organised workshops, conferences, or other demonstrable outcomes.
Applicants must be affiliated with institutions abroad and present challenging, innovative research projects of top academic quality. Selection is strictly merit-based, focusing on the academic excellence of the applicant and the cooperative project, evidenced through achievements such as high-ranking publications, as well as the potential for broader networking with the University of Bayreuth beyond the local host.
Prior to applying, candidates must identify a researcher at the University of Bayreuth to act as a local host, who will provide office or lab space and infrastructure. The grant begins upon signing the Declaration of Acceptance, with funds transferred on the grantee’s first visit to the university, which must take place within a year of acceptance. A project report is required within 15 months of acceptance, and early visits to Bayreuth are encouraged.
The application process is highly competitive, and the Centre strongly encourages female scholars and those who can diversify the university’s research profile to apply.
