The Minor Foundation for Major Challenges in Europe
Section
Applications are now open for Minor Foundation for Major Challenges to support new and unexpected ways of communicating the need for transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
The foundation looks beyond traditional awareness campaigns, instead seeking initiatives that inspire systemic transformation through strategic messaging and narrative innovation.
MFMC supports two distinct funding tracks: large grants and small grants. Small grants, capped at €10,000, follow a streamlined, one-stage application process. In contrast, large grants—typically ranging from €20,000 to €200,000—require a competitive two-stage process beginning with a short pitch. Projects showing exceptional merit and alignment with MFMC's mission may be invited to submit a full proposal for further consideration.
Rather than funding academic research or localized awareness efforts, MFMC prioritizes projects that push boundaries—especially those that can shift policies, institutional practices, or public norms. Applications must articulate the systemic change sought, explain why the applicant is best positioned to deliver it, and demonstrate the urgency and strategic fit of the project.
Eligibility is generally limited to organizations registered in Europe, with rare exceptions for projects of exceptional scope. MFMC explicitly avoids supporting projects that focus solely on individual behavior change, commercial ventures, or research initiatives disconnected from a broader strategy for structural change. Instead, the foundation looks for communication strategies that reach underrepresented audiences, mobilize collective action, and elevate diverse voices in climate advocacy.
Prospective applicants must apply through the UNIFOR portal, first requesting access and, in the case of large grants, submitting a compelling initial pitch. Once approved, applicants can proceed to full application if invited. The process emphasizes clarity, alignment with MFMC’s strategic vision, and readiness to drive tangible environmental impact.
With multiple application rounds each year, MFMC offers an accessible yet selective platform for visionary organizations to amplify their climate communication work, foster institutional shifts, and contribute significantly to global efforts for a carbon-neutral future. Interested groups should prepare early, ensuring their proposals reflect both urgency and strategic thinking.
