The Ray Y Gildea Jr Award supports innovation in teaching and learning in higher and secondary education.

Grants of up to £1,000 are awarded annually. Applications can be made for projects to research, develop and/or pilot innovations in teaching and learning in any field of geography in higher or secondary education. The outcomes of the grant should show direct benefit to students of geography. Applicants must be currently employed in the higher education (college) sector and/or secondary school level, either in the UK or the USA, actively teaching students.

Details of projects undertaken may be published in the Society’s publications and online, including social media. This includes text and images submitted as part of the necessary reporting for an award. Grant recipients may be asked to present a lecture on the work funded by the grant at the Society, or at an event hosted by another relevant organization, at a mutually convenient date. If you would like any particular information about your project or any individual associated with it to not be published or given to the press, please inform the Grants Officer as soon as possible.

Grant recipients must provide information on any relevant press and media releases and coverage, before, during and after the project takes place. If a published media output is a requirement of a grant, the Society retains the copyright for this output unless the Grants Officer informs the grant recipient otherwise. If a published media output is a requirement of a grant, no guarantee is given that this output will be published or broadcast in any way.

Applications are assessed by an external panel of expert reviewers. Reviewers are asked to pay particular attention to the project’s contribution to the advancement of geographical knowledge and the degree to which the project is innovative and original. They also assess the feasibility of the project within the suggested time frame and budget. Reviewers will check whether the applicant has the necessary experience, skills, and qualifications to complete the proposed work within the time and budget.

Finally, the panel looks for evidence of sufficient planning in terms of health and safety, ethical clearance, and permissions, as well as an awareness of the relevant environmental, social, and cultural responsibilities and impacts of the project. The justification of resources and the degree to which the budget is reasonable, appropriate, and sufficiently detailed are also key factors in the review.
