The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund is implementing a vital initiative in the Syrian Arab Republic, focusing on improving health and nutrition outcomes in the Deir ez-Zor Governorate.

This project aims to address the pressing needs of children, adolescents, and mothers in a region heavily impacted by conflict and instability, where access to quality health and nutrition services remains limited.

The program prioritizes multiple areas of health, including adolescent health with an emphasis on sexual and reproductive care, child health, general primary health services, and emergency health interventions. By expanding access to essential services, the project seeks to safeguard the survival and well-being of vulnerable populations, particularly those at risk due to displacement, poverty, and ongoing humanitarian challenges.

Nutrition support is another cornerstone of the initiative. It will focus on infant and young child feeding, the prevention and treatment of malnutrition, the provision of vital micronutrients, and overall nutrition assistance, including during emergencies. These measures aim not only to treat existing malnutrition but also to prevent future cases through early intervention and improved dietary practices.

The expected results will be carefully monitored through performance indicators, tracking the number of children who receive counseling at clinics, undergo nutritional assessments, or are treated for malnutrition. Additional tracking will focus on pregnant and lactating women, ensuring they have access to preventive nutritional supplements such as fortified butter and other essential support.

In the long term, the initiative aims to improve survival rates, expand access to primary health services, and ensure effective monitoring and treatment of malnutrition cases. Beyond immediate relief, it also aspires to create a sustainable impact by influencing community behaviors. By promoting healthier practices and raising awareness, the program contributes to building a healthier society where both children and families can thrive.

Through this intervention, UNICEF underscores its commitment to safeguarding the most vulnerable in Syria, ensuring that health and nutrition remain central pillars of resilience and recovery in Deir ez-Zor.
