Request for Proposals: Young Adults Grant Program (New Zealand)
Section
The Wilson Home Trust offers a Young Adults Grant designed to support individuals aged 17 to 21 who are transitioning into adulthood while living with a physical disability.
This grant helps young people pursue aspirations such as further education, independent living, travel, access to necessary equipment, or bolstering their mental well-being during a significant life shift.
Applicants must meet clear eligibility criteria to be considered. Grants are available only for children and young adults up to the age of 21 who have a physical disability that primarily impairs the function of the body or limbs. While additional sensory or intellectual disabilities may be present, they cannot be the main reason for the funding request. The disability must be described in terms of impairments, activity limitations, or participation restrictions, consistent with the World Health Organisation’s definitions.
Families and caregivers are central to the application process, as the Trust defines “family” broadly to include parents, whānau, primary caregivers, and siblings. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate that they have explored all other possible funding options, such as the Lotteries Commission, Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, or the CP Society, and confirm that the request cannot be covered through government support.
Each year, qualifying young adults can apply for up to $3,450 (including GST), with one application allowed per person every 12 months. The funding cannot be used retrospectively, so applicants must ensure the requested costs are for future expenses. The grant covers a wide range of needs including tertiary study, independent housing, vehicle modifications, communication devices, or access to mental health support.
The application process is straightforward, with forms available online or in downloadable formats. Verification of the disability from a healthcare professional may be required if not already on file. The Trust also provides guidance to families unsure of their eligibility, ensuring the process is as inclusive and supportive as possible.
This grant provides a vital opportunity for young adults with physical disabilities and their families, easing financial pressures while empowering recipients to take important steps toward independence, education, and personal growth across the upper half of New Zealand’s North Island.
