The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is now accepting applications for its Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene - WASH Program.

This initiative seeks to ensure that refugees live in safe and dignified conditions by improving access to potable water and enhancing sanitation and hygiene infrastructure in line with recognized standards.

A central aim of the program is to guarantee a sufficient and reliable supply of clean drinking water. The implementing partner will be responsible for operating and maintaining water supply systems within the camps, ensuring that these systems remain functional, safe, and sustainable. Where necessary, upgrades will be carried out to improve efficiency and reach, with cost-effectiveness and long-term durability as guiding principles.

In addition to water provision, the initiative emphasizes improved sanitation services. This includes constructing sanitation facilities and developing systems for managing both solid and liquid waste. The work will be done in strict adherence to environmental management policies to ensure that the solutions provided do not pose risks to health or the surrounding environment. Institutions within the camps, such as schools and healthcare centers, will also benefit from enhanced sanitation infrastructure.

WASH services will extend to public and high-traffic areas such as community leaders’ offices and distribution centers, where access to clean and functional facilities is crucial. These installations will be managed and maintained in response to emerging needs, ensuring continued support for the wider community.

Equally important is the promotion of hygiene awareness among refugees. The program will provide both the knowledge and the resources needed to encourage proper hygiene practices. This includes the distribution of hygiene supplies and the construction of supportive infrastructure, all designed to foster daily habits that reduce the risk of disease and improve overall well-being.

Partners involved in this work must align with UNHCR’s established sector standards to ensure the consistent protection of displaced and stateless persons. By delivering reliable WASH services, the initiative not only addresses basic needs but also reinforces dignity, health, and resilience among some of the most vulnerable communities in Tanzania.
