Open Call: Self-Reliance and Economic Inclusion Activities (Lot 10) – Tanzania
Section
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has issued a Call for Expression of Interest under Lot 10, focusing on Self-Reliance and Economic Inclusion Activities in the Livelihoods and Economic Inclusion sector.
This significant initiative is being launched to strengthen self-reliance and economic inclusion for refugees, asylum seekers, and host community members living in the Nduta and Nyarugusu camps. This effort focuses on creating sustainable livelihood opportunities that not only improve food and nutrition security but also build resilience and encourage peaceful co-existence between displaced populations and local communities.
One of the primary areas of focus is climate-resilient agriculture. Refugees and host communities will be supported in developing kitchen gardens and engaging in sustainable farming practices. Through training in good agronomic techniques and climate-smart agriculture, along with the provision of seeds, tools, and small livestock, participants will be better equipped to increase household food production and income. Special emphasis will be placed on inclusive activities such as mushroom farming, beekeeping, and integrated poultry–aquaculture systems, particularly benefiting marginalized groups.
Alongside agricultural support, the program also prioritizes vocational skills development. Through established training centers in both camps, participants will have access to short-term vocational courses in trades such as tailoring, carpentry, welding, baking, and electronics repair. These programs are designed to align with market needs and are complemented by entrepreneurship training, business management, and basic literacy education. Upon graduation, participants receive certifications and resources to help them continue learning and start their own income-generating activities.
Digital literacy and online learning form another key component of the program. Refugees and host community members will participate in blended learning courses that combine in-person instruction with access to global online platforms such as Coursera. These courses cover foundational digital skills and financial education, helping learners build confidence in navigating the modern job market and gain formal certification for their achievements.
To ensure sustainable impact, the initiative also works to break down barriers to financial services. By partnering with financial institutions and development agencies, UNHCR and its partners aim to expand access to inclusive banking and digital marketplaces. Initiatives like MADE51 will support artisans and entrepreneurs in reaching wider markets, creating opportunities for economic integration and growth.
Altogether, this comprehensive program is designed to empower communities with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities they need to become self-sufficient. By promoting sustainable agriculture, market-relevant skills, digital access, and financial inclusion, it paves the way for a more resilient and integrated future for both refugees and host communities in Tanzania.
