The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is inviting organizations to partner in a comprehensive protection and solutions project aimed at enhancing the safety and well-being of refugees and asylum-seekers in the country.

As of mid-2025, Uganda hosts nearly 1.93 million refugees, predominantly women and children, many of whom face significant protection challenges. The initiative focuses on three core areas: Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and response, community-based protection, and legal assistance.

In the realm of GBV, the project seeks to implement prevention and response initiatives, including case management, community awareness campaigns, and efforts to enhance access to safety and justice. Activities will address the root causes of GBV, such as gender inequality and harmful social norms, and engage both men and boys alongside women and girls to dismantle unequal power relations. Additionally, the project aims to provide timely, quality case management and equitable access to specialized survivor-centered GBV services, including integrated care and multi-sectoral services such as health, psychosocial support, justice, and livelihoods for GBV survivors.

Regarding community-based protection, the project aims to enhance refugee and host community participation in decision-making processes by strengthening the Refugee Engagement Forum (REF) and training Refugee-led Organizations (RLOs) to access sustainable funding and expand their roles. This approach ensures diverse voices are included for a more inclusive refugee response in Uganda, promoting accountability to affected people, ensuring disability inclusion, and supporting local integration. Community-led initiatives will also be implemented to strengthen social cohesion and promote peaceful coexistence between refugees and host communities.

In the area of legal assistance, the project aims to provide support to refugees and asylum-seekers in accessing legal services and navigating the legal processes related to their status and rights. This includes facilitating access to justice and ensuring that individuals are informed of their legal rights and available remedies.

Organizations interested in participating are encouraged to attend this session to gain a comprehensive understanding of the project's objectives and requirements.

This initiative represents a significant opportunity for organizations committed to refugee protection and solutions to collaborate with UNHCR in addressing the pressing needs of refugees and asylum-seekers in Uganda. By partnering in this project, organizations can contribute to creating safer, more inclusive environments for displaced populations, fostering resilience and promoting long-term solutions.
