The Allianz Climate Risk Award celebrates scientists at the start of their career whose work sheds light on the nexus between climate change and extreme weather events.
Applicants are invited to submit research on how climate change and extreme weather events affect global trade. Whether your research focuses on better predictions of extreme weather events on trade routes, the overall resilience of trade networks to climate-related disruptions, or interdisciplinary collaboration between climate science and trade economics-the experts of Allianz Trade are keen to hear from you!

- Special 2025: Allianz Trade Award:
- This award, sponsored by Allianz Trade, honors research focused on exploring the connection between climate change and extreme weather events in relation to global trade.
Award Information
- The winners of the Allianz Climate Risk Award 2025 and the Allianz Trade Award will receive a monetary award of EUR 7000.
- The other finalists will receive a monetary award of EUR 3000 each.
Costs Covered
- Allianz Re and Allianz Trade will cover their respective top finalists' flight or train to and from Munich (arrival: one day before the event, departure: afternoon/evening on the same day of the event), transportation, hotel, one dinner and one lunch.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Allianz Climate Risk Award is a global award open to PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers whose research focuses on:
- Understanding and mitigating the risk of extreme weather events that are intensified by climate change;
- Fostering resilience by applying technological solutions.
- 10 applicants are shortlisted by a jury of experts from industry and academia and their work is published in a Compendium on Allianz Re’s website. Out of the 10 shortlisted applicants, the top 3 finalists are invited to Munich, Germany, to present their research project at the Allianz Climate Risk Award Event.
Selection Criteria
- Innovation: Research project is focused on a compelling approach for assessing risks of natural catastrophes and how new technologies can help mitigate these risks and foster resilient societies
- Impact: Research project can make a difference on the current insurance practice and/or advance current practices around societal resilience
- Applicability: Research project addresses a relevant problem and is ideally connected to a practical solution
- Academic excellence: Sound research approach and methodology
Application Requirements
- Submission requirements:
- University students currently pursuing either a PhD degree or a post-doc, as well as recent PhD graduates (Graduation/defense of final research to obtain title should not be more than two years before the time of the application)
- Research applicable to focus and topic of the Allianz Climate Risk Award or the Allianz Trade Award
- Submission documents include:
- A non-technical essay on the research project
- A letter of recommendation from the candidate's academic mentor
- Filled and signed declaration form
- Completed application form for either the Allianz Climate Risk Award or the Allianz Trade Award
