The World Food Programme (WFP) is supporting food security efforts in Colombia through an initiative designed to provide immediate relief to vulnerable communities.

The program focuses on delivering in-kind food assistance to households living in poverty, extreme poverty, and high vulnerability across four departments: La Guajira, Vichada, Córdoba, and Sucre.

Under this initiative, selected cooperating partners will have the opportunity to implement food distribution activities in one or more of these regions, depending on their capacity and geographical presence. The primary goal is to ensure that households in crisis situations receive essential food items that meet their basic dietary needs.

The food assistance will be delivered in the form of personal food baskets, each containing non-perishable goods carefully selected to align with the Food-Based Dietary Guidelines for the Colombian Population (GABAs). These baskets will provide nutritional support during emergencies, with a standard package comprising 14 food items drawn from different food groups to ensure dietary balance.

Beyond nutritional considerations, the program places strong emphasis on food safety and quality. All items included in the food packages must comply with current sanitary regulations and be processed under strict standards of manufacturing, storage, and distribution. This ensures that the food provided is not only nutritious but also safe and suitable for consumption.

With this initiative, WFP is reinforcing its commitment to tackling food insecurity and strengthening emergency response systems in Colombia. By addressing the urgent needs of communities across La Guajira, Vichada, Córdoba, and Sucre, the program aims to improve resilience, protect lives, and provide a foundation for healthier futures in some of the country’s most vulnerable areas.
