The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a call for proposals for the implementation of school feeding activities in the Provinces of Kasai Oriental, Kasai Central and Lomami.

Aims
  • This project aims to:
    • Ensure the preparation and distribution of hot and nutritious meals to students and teachers during working days in targeted primary schools;
    • Develop school gardens and community fields to promote local production of rich foods for menu diversification and meal improvement; Alleviate hunger to improve the learning capacity of students in schools in intervention areas;
    • Improve retention and success rates of girls and boys in primary schools supported by WFP;
    • Collaborate with state health services to organize awareness raising and deworming activities with Mebendazole for students in targeted schools;
    • Promote good practices for optimal feeding through Information, Education and Communication in schools; to children and families, particularly girls and women and the education community, awareness-raising activities;
    • Respect the principle of child protection;
    • Contribute to the realization of cooking demonstrations based on local foods for women, pregnant and breastfeeding girls and school canteen cooks;
    • Keep beneficiary children and teachers in good physical condition during class hours;
    • Promote awareness and education on practices conducive to optimal nutrition, access to water, hygiene and sanitation for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, teachers and cooks;
    • Improve hygiene and nutrition practices among learners in order to keep them in good physical condition.
Objective
  • The overall objective of this school feeding program is to increase student enrollment in targeted schools, while improving access to education, school attendance and reducing the dropout rate in targeted schools in the provinces of Kasai Oriental, Kasai Central and Lomami.

Expected Results 
  • Food stocks allocated to schools are managed appropriately. Proper handling, storage and management of products with 0 food stocks at the end of the Project in schools and secondary warehouses;
  • Hot meals are prepared according to plan and served to students and teachers;
  • School gardens are maintained to promote food production;
  • Staff involved in the school canteen program are trained and put into practice the acquired knowledge;
  • School canteen management committees are functional in each school;
  • Students, teachers and cooks as well as their family members benefit from assistance;
  • Students, teachers, members of school canteen management committees receive information on nutrition, health promotion, hygiene and sanitation;
  • Students are dewormed with Mebendazole during the school year;
  • Women, pregnant and breastfeeding girls and school canteen cooks participated in cooking demonstration sessions with local food producers;
  • The beneficiary children and teachers were kept in good physical condition during class hours;
  • Implement protection activities, AAP, promotion of gender equality and conflict sensitivity relevant to this intervention;
  • Members of the educational community (students, teachers, parents' committee, storekeepers, cooks, community leaders, parents) have favorable nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and practices.
  • A monthly report is established on the program.
