The Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future is offering a compelling grant opportunity through its annual Call for Proposals, designed to support projects that bolster the conservation and sustainable use of Belize’s coastal and marine environments.

This initiative invites eligible non-governmental entities—including NGOs, educational institutions, community associations, and private businesses—that have been operational in Belize for at least a year and have a demonstrable track record of effective project and financial management.

Applicants begin by submitting a concise concept paper through an online platform, outlining their project’s alignment with key thematic areas such as biodiversity protection, sustainable fisheries, climate resilience, or blue business innovation. The concept paper should include organizational background, project summary, clear objectives and outcomes, thematic relevance, and a budget overview. If accepted, applicants move on to develop a full proposal with technical support and guidance, including financial management assistance and proposal writing expertise.

Funding is available across three tiers—small, medium, and large grants—with varying durations and co-financing requirements. Small grants, up to BZD 50,000, require no co-financing and typically cover projects of up to a year. Medium grants, ranging from BZD 50,000 to BZD 150,000, span up to two years and require a minimum of 10% co-funding. Large grants, exceeding BZD 150,000, are for projects up to three years in length and typically require 25% co-financing—or up to 50% in the case of for-profit entities. There is also a community grant category aimed at grassroots organizations, offering up to BZD 50,000 with no co-financing necessary.

The call encourages innovative initiatives such as enhancing fisheries product value, improving traceability, promoting reef-friendly tourism, piloting aquaculture projects, reducing marine litter through circular economy approaches, and advancing water quality management through responsible wastewater treatment. Collaborative and novel approaches that bridge gaps between blue economy development and environmental safeguards are especially welcome.

Through this grant program, the Belize Fund seeks to empower local actors who are committed to building environmentally sustainable and economically resilient coastal and marine landscapes. The process is competitive and underscores transparency, impact, and strategic support for transformative activities that unlock long-term benefits for Belize’s ocean ecosystems.
