Section
The Selected Professions Fellowships support women who are pursuing their first full-time master’s or professional degree in fields with historically low female participation, particularly in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines, at accredited U.S. institutions.
Academic excellence, as demonstrated by academic records and achievements, recognition from peers, professors, and/or institutions, and other forms of distinction. Well-defined career goals in a STEM field and demonstrated passion and commitment to a career in the chosen profession. Demonstrated passion and commitment to STEM through sustained academic focus, active participation in STEM-related extracurricular activities, and potential to apply knowledge and experience to improve equity or contribute to societal advancement in STEM. Demonstrated commitment to supporting other women and girls through service in their communities or professions. Special consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate their intent to professionally serve under resourced populations and communities or to pursue public interest areas. Applicants who have demonstrated resilience in overcoming life challenges beyond their control, such as socioeconomic status, discrimination, limited academic resources or opportunities, or other adverse circumstances are preferred. Applicants who were the first in their family to attain a bachelor’s degree are preferred. Applicants who hail from single parent households are preferred.
The fellowship provides a $20,000 stipend, paid directly to the fellow in two equal installments at the beginning and midpoint of the fellowship term. The funds can be used for tuition, fees, and course-required expenses such as books and supplies, as well as for living expenses, including housing, food, and childcare. The funds cannot be used for costs incurred before the start or after the end of the fellowship term.
To be eligible, applicants must identify as a woman and be pursuing a full-time program at an accredited institution in the U.S. or an international institution eligible for U.S. federal student aid. They must hold an academic degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree but must not already hold a master's or professional degree. Applicants must begin their program on or before September 1, 2026, and complete it on or after April 30, 2027.
Fellowships are available for specific master’s and professional degree programs. These include a variety of disciplines in Architecture, Natural and Physical Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Fellowships are also available for professional degrees in Medicine, such as the Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). Applicants should apply for a fellowship in only one specific discipline area.
Required application materials include a narrative application and two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant’s work. Applicants must also submit copies of all degrees earned to date and official transcripts confirming the conferral of those degrees. If documents are not in English, a certified translation is necessary. For architecture students, 4-6 reproductions of design projects are also required.
Applicants who are members of the AAUW Board of Directors, AAUW employees, or AAUW Review Panelists are not eligible. Immediate family members of these individuals are also disqualified. Additionally, applicants for another national AAUW fellowship or grant in the same year, or previous recipients of national AAUW fellowships or grants, with some exceptions, are not eligible. The application closes on 30 September 2025.
