The AAUW Community Action Grant offers a transformative opportunity for community-based organizations and AAUW affiliates to further the education and equity of girls in K‑12 settings.

The Community Action Grants offer up to $75,000 to support nonprofits and educational institutions dedicated to helping girls in grades K–12 build the skills, confidence, and preparation they need to thrive in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This general operating support grant provides a flexible infusion of funds that nonprofits can deploy as they see fit to amplify impact, foster innovation, and strengthen their mission-driven work. The funding period spans from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, offering a full year to make meaningful progress and drive sustainable initiatives.

Applicants seeking this grant must be recognized under IRS code section 501(c)(3), though AAUW branches and state organizations with 501(c)(4) status may also apply. The heart of eligibility lies in dedicating the majority of the previous year’s expenses—over 51 percent—toward education and equity initiatives for girls in grades K‑12. While general equity projects are encouraged, those with a STEM focus and those serving underserved communities are especially welcomed.

The application journey invites organizations to present a compelling narrative demonstrating how the grant will enhance their capacity to advance gender equity. Clear identification of desired outcomes and a realistic plan to achieve them are critical, along with evidence of organizational readiness and community partnerships. Priority is given to applicants who show potential for further support from stakeholders—be it through additional funding or collaboration with local entities.

Required documentation includes proof of tax‑exempt status, financial records (such as the previous and current fiscal year budgets, balance sheet, profit-and-loss statements), as well as the narrative proposal and a detailed project budget with justification.

Importantly, there are clear boundaries around disqualification and ineligible activities. Individuals such as AAUW board members, employees, review panelists, or their immediate relatives may not apply. Equally, organizations that received the Community Action Grant in the recent past must wait at least three years before reapplying. Grant funds must not support political endeavors, voter drives, other organizations or individuals, or past debts.

Finally, the selection process is rigorous and competitive. Panels evaluate submissions based on alignment with AAUW’s mission, clarity of intention, feasibility, and potential impact. While feedback is not provided post-decision, every application contributes to AAUW’s broader mission of advancing equity for women and girls nationwide.
