The Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has launched the Wheels and Walks programme, a new initiative designed to encourage people across Greater Manchester to become more active through walking, wheeling, and cycling.
Running from early 2025 to late 2026, the programme aims to support local communities by providing resources to help deliver accessible and inclusive active travel activities.
The initiative will work with around 40 community groups, chosen through a formal application process. Each selected group will receive a comprehensive support package from TfGM to develop and deliver walking, wheeling, or cycling sessions tailored to the needs of their local communities. The goal is to foster sustained participation and promote healthier, more connected lifestyles in areas that will benefit most.
Successful applicants will receive grant funding of up to £5,000, along with access to training and development opportunities, advice and guidance, and the chance to network and share knowledge with other participating groups. TfGM will also offer signposting to additional opportunities that can help enhance or expand the group’s impact.
To ensure the programme reaches those who can make the greatest difference, eligibility is limited to certain types of organisations. These include voluntary and community organisations, registered charities, social enterprises, community interest companies (with two or more directors), education providers such as schools and colleges, and NHS healthcare providers. Groups of organisations may also apply, provided they are led by an eligible community-based organisation.
The programme is not open to individuals, sole traders, or profit-driven companies. Additionally, applications submitted on behalf of another organisation, or from groups without at least two unconnected board or committee members, will not be considered.
Wheels and Walks is an important step in making active travel a part of everyday life for people across Greater Manchester, creating healthier communities and more accessible transport options through local leadership and engagement.
