Apply for Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program
Section
The Direct Aid Program (DAP), led by the Australian Government, is a targeted initiative designed to provide financial assistance directly to communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This small but flexible grant program focuses on sustainable development by funding projects that deliver immediate, practical, and measurable outcomes. Its core objective is to support grassroots efforts that promote community well-being, self-sufficiency, and economic development in disadvantaged populations.
To access this funding, applicants must first complete an Expression of Interest through the Smarty Grants platform. This initial step requires a basic outline of the proposed project, including goals, location, thematic areas, and a preliminary budget. Organizations that advance past this phase will be asked to submit a more comprehensive proposal with detailed documentation. This includes up-to-date price quotes, letters of recommendation, incorporation documents, legal proof of representation, and tax registration records. If the project involves working with children or construction work, child protection policies and feasibility studies must also be included.
The application period for the 2025–2026 cycle is divided by region. Organizations in Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama can submit applications. For projects in Mexico, the window runs from September 22 to October 10, 2025. Each applicant is responsible for checking updates and correspondence through the Smarty Grants platform and must ensure they apply using the correct country-specific link.
To support potential applicants, the Embassy is offering two online information sessions. One has already taken place, while the second is scheduled for September 12, 2025. This session provides guidance on the application process, project eligibility, and evaluation criteria. A recording of the session will also be made available on the Embassy's website for future reference.
Eligible organizations include NGOs, cooperatives, civil associations, and academic institutions that are legally constituted in the countries covered by the program. Individuals and government entities are not eligible. While all development-focused projects are considered, preference will be given to those aligned with Australia’s strategic interests, particularly in the areas of First Nations engagement, gender equality, digital inclusion, climate change, and ocean sustainability. Projects that address humanitarian needs, reproductive health, education, LGBTQ+ rights, and freedom of expression are also welcomed.
Each DAP project must be completed within one year of receiving funds. The maximum standard funding per project is AUD $20,000, though Cuba is allowed up to AUD $30,000. In exceptional cases, projects may receive slightly higher amounts, up to a maximum of AUD $60,000. Nonetheless, the program favors proposals that request within the typical funding range, as this increases the likelihood of approval.
The Direct Aid Program stands as a meaningful opportunity for organizations committed to social change. By supporting projects with immediate community benefits and sustainable development goals, the program helps forge stronger, more resilient communities throughout the region.
