The World Food Programme (WFP) is leading a vital initiative focused on improving education and food security through school-based interventions.

This program, operating under the sectors of Education and Food Assistance, aims to enhance the well-being of students while supporting broader community development.

One of the primary components of the initiative is the distribution of food commodities to schools. These are used to provide daily cooked meals or take-home rations (THR), ensuring that children receive essential nutrition while encouraging regular school attendance. The integration of fortified and diverse food groups supports the nutritional needs of students and promotes healthier development outcomes.

To strengthen the sustainability of school feeding efforts, WFP is working closely with schools and communities. Parent-teacher associations are being formed and trained in school feeding management, ensuring local ownership and efficient implementation. A school menu planner is also being rolled out to offer cost-effective, nutritious meal options tailored to local needs and resources.

Beyond food provision, the initiative includes comprehensive nutrition education. Students, teachers, cooks, and parents are engaged in sessions that promote healthier food choices and positive behavioral change. Interpersonal communication strategies and social behavior change communications (SBCC) are helping to reinforce key messages at the community level.

A strong monitoring system is in place to guide decision-making and improve program effectiveness. Regular reporting and assessment activities ensure that the intervention remains adaptive and impactful. Stakeholder engagement is also a key feature, involving students, teachers, community members, and local producers in meaningful consultation and collaboration.

The expected outcomes of the program are far-reaching. By stabilizing school enrolment, improving attendance, and reducing gender disparities, WFP is contributing directly to educational progress in the region. At the same time, the initiative supports local economies through the Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) model, which sources food from smallholder farmers. This creates new income-generating opportunities and strengthens local agricultural value chains.

Overall, the WFP’s efforts in Gezira are helping to build a more resilient education and food system, ensuring that children not only stay in school but also thrive in a healthier, more supportive learning environment.
