The Royal Irish Academy (RIA) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), with the support of the Scottish Government Office in Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs, are pleased to invite applications for the Ireland-Scotland Bilateral Network Grants. The objectives of the scheme are to strengthen co-operation and learning between Scotland and Ireland through bilateral funding for joint projects; to foster partnerships/networks within and beyond academia; to encourage the initiation of new partnerships and/or the development of existing partnerships; and to contribute to policy discussion in Ireland and Scotland in the specified thematic area. In 2025, the Ireland–Scotland Bilateral Network Grants invites applications which address the theme of ‘Community and Diaspora’. The grant is open to academic researchers working in higher education institutions or research institutes in Scotland or Ireland, excluding Northern Ireland. The lead applicant must be a full or part-time academic in any of the listed disciplines and a salaried or tenured staff member on a contract that extends beyond the end of the grant period. Each application must include a partner from the other country, with co-investigators welcome from across the Humanities, Social Sciences or Sciences. Industry participation is also encouraged. Projects can be new collaborations or build upon existing ones, and interdisciplinary approaches are particularly welcomed. Early career researchers are encouraged to apply or be included as active participants. Applicants must demonstrate expected outputs such as a written report in plain English, a short summary video, and participation in an end-of-project summit. Other outputs may include exhibitions, events, or new networks. The impact of projects should highlight bilateral and in-country activities that would not have occurred otherwise, benefits for project partners and the wider public, and opportunities for future grants or collaborations. Applications must be supported by an Institutional Statement of Support and a Statement of Agreement from the co-investigator. The call for applications opens on 4 September 2025 and closes on 22 October 2025. Successful applicants will be informed by the end of December 2025, with projects expected to run for 3–6 months and final reports due by 31 July 2026. The maximum grant available is £12,500 per project, covering costs such as research time, administrative assistance, research consumables, library fees, publication costs, translation services, transcription, research-related travel, and dissemination expenses. Ineligible costs include salary on-costs, equipment purchases, and event organisation costs.
