Grants for Biodiversity rehabilitation in the Lower Dniester National Park (Moldova)
Section
The United Nations Development Programme Moldova has announced a grant competition titled “Biodiversity Rehabilitation in the Lower Dniester National Park,” inviting civil society organizations to apply through an expression of interest process.
This important funding opportunity is aimed at restoring biodiversity in the Lower Dniester National Park, a Ramsar-designated and legally protected area vital for sustaining wetland ecosystems, native species, and habitat connectivity in Eastern Europe.
The Lower Dniester serves as a lifeline for Moldova, providing water for nearly two-thirds of the population while sustaining rich biodiversity. However, hydrological changes from upstream dams, unsustainable land use, pollution, and invasive species have degraded vital wetland habitats. The grant scheme seeks an NGO capable of implementing nature-based restoration actions to address these challenges and enhance resilience in the face of climate change.
Through this call, the selected organization will both build its internal capacity to deliver nature-based and climate-adaptive solutions, and carry out practical restoration interventions. Projects may include reestablishing meanders and wetlands, restoring native riparian vegetation, controlling invasive species, reconnecting freshwater corridors, and enhancing habitats for target fish and bird species. The initiative also supports eco-tourism infrastructure like observation platforms, educational trails, interpretive signage, and community engagement with schools and cultural institutions.
The total budget allocated for this call is $150,000, provided through financial support from Sweden. Eligible expenditures include remuneration for technical experts, transportation and logistics, event organization, communication costs such as awareness-raising materials and signage, as well as taxes and duties in line with Moldovan legislation. Applicants must also declare any grant programs funded by UNDP or any goods and services provided to UNDP between 2023 and 2027, ensuring that the total cumulative value does not exceed $300,000 during this period.
To qualify, applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements. Organizations must be registered as a Public Association (non-profit) or Local Action Group in Moldova, with at least three years of proven experience and prior work in community sustainability projects. They must also not hold an active grant agreement with UNDP at the time of application.
This grant offers a powerful opportunity for local environmental organizations to lead ecological restoration in one of Moldova’s most iconic landscapes, combining conservation action with capacity-building and community collaboration to safeguard the future of the Lower Dniester National Park.
