The Habitat and Biodiversity Grant Funding programme offers vital support for projects that protect and enhance natural environments, with the vision of creating healthy ecosystems where native species can thrive.

This initiative is designed to encourage practical, long-term improvements to habitats while ensuring projects are environmentally sustainable, inclusive, and beneficial to local communities.

At its core, the programme supports projects that increase biodiversity at the site and ensure that no natural habitats are damaged in the process. Proposals are also expected to work toward sustainability goals, reducing the carbon footprint of the project site and striving for carbon neutrality. Alongside environmental impact, projects should demonstrate how they will engage the community. This includes evidence of consultation with those who use or will benefit from the site, as well as creating new opportunities for volunteering and community involvement.

Inclusivity plays an important role in the assessment process, especially for sites with public access. Trustees want to see spaces that encourage participation by all members of society, regardless of culture, religion, age, gender, background, or ability. The fund aims to support projects that not only protect biodiversity but also promote shared use and wellbeing across diverse communities.

Eligible organisations include charities, constituted non-profits, and local authorities that have been established for at least two years. They must demonstrate robust governance, with a minimum of two unrelated directors or trustees, and ensure that directors, trustees, or members do not financially benefit from the project. The project must be located within ten miles of an eligible landfill site and take place on a single site, such as a woodland, nature reserve, or waterway. Funding can also support land purchases for conservation purposes, provided legal ownership or valid lease agreements are in place.

Grants between £10,000 and £75,000 are available, with larger requests considered from registered charities and local authorities. Eligible costs include habitat improvement works, biodiversity enhancement measures, staff directly involved in project delivery, essential equipment, and land purchase expenses. However, the programme does not support running costs, income-generating projects, or costs already incurred.

Funded projects must begin within four months of receiving a grant and be completed within 12 months, ensuring timely impact. Only one application per site is permitted in a 12-month period, and repeat applications require a waiting period after final payments.

By funding these initiatives, the programme helps create sustainable, biodiverse spaces that not only safeguard natural habitats but also strengthen community engagement and environmental stewardship for the future.
