The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has opened applications for the Future Drought Fund Drought Resilience Innovation Challenges Pilot Program.

This initiative is designed to tackle three major cross-regional and industry-wide challenges caused by drought and climate impacts. It seeks innovative, practical solutions that can strengthen resilience in farming communities, agricultural sectors, and regions across Australia.

The program aims to fast-track the adoption of high-impact practices, tools, and technologies that can be scaled and applied broadly. By focusing on applied research already showing promise, the program will help ensure that farmers and communities have quicker access to evidence-based innovations. These solutions are expected to improve adaptation to the realities of climate change and prolonged drought conditions.

Applicants are encouraged to form consortiums that bring together innovators, farmers, communities, commercial partners, and regional stakeholders. Such collaborations are expected to build stronger evidence for innovative ideas, accelerate development, and expand the reach of successful practices. The emphasis is on cross-regional, system-wide impact, rather than localized approaches, ensuring that the benefits extend widely.

Eligibility to lead a consortium is limited to Australian-based organisations legally capable of entering binding agreements with the Commonwealth. Eligible entities include companies, cooperatives, incorporated associations, Indigenous corporations, local governments, statutory entities, and corporate or non-corporate state and territory entities.

The program has a clear timeline for grant activities. Applications will be assessed within 12 weeks of closing, with approvals finalized by 18 weeks and notifications issued by 19 weeks. Grant agreements will be negotiated and awarded within 23 weeks. Projects funded under this program may commence as early as May 2026, with all activities to be completed by 30 June 2028.
