Section
The Indigenous Community Sport Development Grant Program seeks to expand organized sport opportunities for Indigenous youth throughout Saskatchewan, encompassing urban, rural, reserve-based, and isolated communities.
The program supports communities in building capacity for sustained, inclusive sports participation with a strong focus on coaching, volunteer leadership, and pathways for advancement into structured competition.
This grant empowers communities to introduce and nurture full-spectrum sports programming—from initial exposure and skills training to the formation of teams, clubs, leagues, and tournament participation. Volunteers and local champions are central to this process, with the program aiming to increase the number of community leaders supporting youth through sport.
Eligible applicants include organizations serving First Nations and Métis populations, incorporated under provincial nonprofit legislation, with at least one year of operation. In instances where smaller communities or informal groups wish to participate, they are invited to collaborate with eligible organizations or submit with endorsement from local leaders like mayors or chiefs. Proof of participant insurance and adherence to reporting requirements are prerequisites to maintain eligibility.
Grants range between CAD 1,000 and CAD 5,000 per initiative annually, with a maximum total of CAD 25,000 available to organizations working across multiple communities. Applicants must outline how the initiative will remain sustainable beyond the funding cycle, detailing plans to secure additional support and resource partnerships. A letter of support from a recognized community leader must accompany each application.
This initiative offers an opportunity to invest in the health, well-being, and leadership potential of Indigenous youth through sport. By supporting capacity-building, increasing participation, and reinforcing community-owned programming, the fund fosters holistic, grassroots-led development in diverse settings across the province.
