Direct Aid Program: Small Grants for High-Impact Community Projects (Indonesia)
Section
The Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program (DAP) is a flexible small grants initiative managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) overseas posts, designed to support development projects that contribute to sustainable economic growth, poverty reduction, and a positive image of Australia.
DAP prioritises projects in the areas of community and/or rural development, education, gender equality, disabilities, youth, human rights, the environment, small-scale infrastructure, economic empowerment, and ad hoc humanitarian relief. It also supports sporting activities, initiatives that enhance educational and cultural exchanges and people-to-people links, and projects that provide educational or occupational/skills training. Favourable consideration is given to projects where applicants and their communities contribute in labour, materials, transport, or cash.
Projects funded under DAP must deliver practical, tangible outcomes with a strong development focus. They should be self-contained, achievable within a finite timeline, and, ideally, have sustainable benefits. Initiatives that can serve as a model for similar projects or act as a catalyst for further community development are especially welcomed.
DAP will not fund commercial ventures, cash grants, micro-credit schemes, major asset purchases such as vehicles, staff salaries, routine administrative costs, or international travel. Funding is capped at AUD 16,000 over the life of the project, with a maximum duration of two years.
Applications must clearly define specific outputs, demonstrate cost-effectiveness, outline achievable and sustainable outcomes, and include sound project design. The program also requires adherence to relevant safety, child protection, and ethical standards.
