The Alzheimer’s Disease Research, a BrightFocus Foundation program, provides research funds for U.S. domestic and international researchers pursuing pioneering research leading to greater understanding, prevention, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

They are committed to supporting scientists from diverse backgrounds to foster creativity and innovation in addressing complex scientific challenges and strongly encourage applications from individuals who are from groups underrepresented in Alzheimer’s disease research.

Categories
  • Standard Awards
    • This research grant program is restricted to new and early investigators who have obtained their MD, PhD, or equivalent degree and/or completed formal medical training/residency within the past 12 years at the time of application. The applicant must serve as the principal investigator on the project, have institutional permission to manage the award, and the key personnel associated with the proposal.
  • Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards
    • Postdoctoral fellowship awards are intended for young researchers in their final stages of mentored training. These awards fund projects in an established laboratory that will serve as the basis for the applicant’s independent research career.

    • Award Amount: $100,000 per year (total value $300,000)
    • Duration: up to 3 years
  • Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards:
    • Award Amount: $100,000 per year (total value $200,000)
    • Duration: 2 years
Eligibility Criteria
  • Standard Awards:
    • Candidates must hold an MD, PhD, DVM, DO, OD or equivalent degree and be within 12 years of conferral
    • Applicant must serve as the Principal Investigator on the project and have dedicated laboratory space. The applicant should use the indicated space on the application forms to clarify any position that is not immediately recognizable as an independent research position
    • While some of the grant can be used to support salary for the PI, the percent requested should be limited to the lesser of 35% of the yearly grant request, or 35% of the individual’s salary. Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) salaries are capped at the lesser of 25% of the yearly grant request, or 25% of the individual’s salary.
    • Applicants may currently be working in a non-profit, governmental, academic research institution, or at a for-profit including start-up and biotech institution
  • Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards:
    • Candidates must hold an MD, PhD, DVM, DO, OD or equivalent degree and be within 5 years of degree conferral or end of residency. An additional year of eligibility may be granted for certain circumstances (i.e. maternity leave). Applicants with pending appointments are eligible to apply, but the appointment must be finalized by the start of the award. Candidates must submit a written exception request to BrightFocus and obtain approval before applying
    • Applicant may apply for this fellowship before completing their terminal degree, if they have a firm commitment from the laboratory head in which training will take place, and the applicant is the main author of the application
    • Fellowship may be performed in a non-profit, governmental, academic research institution, or at a forprofit including start-up and biotech institution
Application Requirements
  • General Submission Guidelines:
    • Submit your application using the instructions provided in the application portal
    • Use font at a size no less than 11 points
    • Use margins no less than 3/4" on all sides
    • The color of the narrative text should be black
    • Applications must be legible and written in English
    • Do not use jargons or unusual abbreviations
    • Maximum character and/or word/page counts for individual sections will be enforced
