The ESO-Chilean Government Joint Committee has opened its funding opportunities for the year 2025.

Areas
  • This fund will support projects related to the following areas:
    • Postdoctoral programs in astronomy at Chilean institutions
    • Support for academic institutions by financing introductory positions for full, associate, or assistant professors for periods of up to two years at Chilean institutions.
    • Pilot training programs for teaching and disseminating astronomy in Chile.
    • Projects for the development and construction of technological systems for astronomy.
    • Extended scientific visits by postdocs, researchers, or academics from Chilean academic institutions.
    • Astronomy development projects in areas not covered by the previous categories.
Funding Information
  • Postdoctoral programs in astronomy can have a maximum annual salary per person of up to CLP 34,250,000, which will include the net salary, plus possible additional expenses such as travel and equipment (up to CLP 4,500,000 annually), health insurance, and overheads, which must be explicitly detailed within the proposal itself. Letters of support from institutions that include explicit information on the use of overheads and institutional support will be positively evaluated. The duration of these programs is a maximum of two years.
  • Educational projects for the teaching and dissemination of astronomy in Chile have a Maximum total financing of up to CLP 20,000,000. The duration of these projects is a maximum of 2 years.
  • Projects for the development and construction of technological systems for astronomy do not have a defined maximum funding limit. These programs have a maximum duration of two years.
  • Extended scientific visit programs last only one to three months. These programs do not have a defined maximum funding limit. The budget may include per-diem assistance and partial or full assistance with airfare.
  • Projects in areas not previously covered have a maximum funding limit of up to CLP 10,000,000. These projects have a maximum duration of two years.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Applications are institutional, that is, only organizations can submit projects with legal personality. These organizations are called Responsible Institutions.
  • Each application must have a Responsible Person, who will be responsible for submitting the application and ensuring the proper progress of the project and the delivery of the renditions and reports.
  • The Responsible Person must have the support of the Responsible Institution.
  • Each Responsible Person may submit a maximum of one (1) project per area of postulation.
  • In the case of postdoctoral positions, applicants must be academics. The maximum number of postdoctoral applications per person is one per year.
